Cover Runway Sunday
They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but we all know we do it. Sometimes the cover initially catches our eye, drawing us to give a book a closer look. It's the first thing we see, our first impression. Every Sunday I'm going to post some of my favorite covers of books coming soon!
For nearly a century, people have ventured to the idyllic seaside town of Maple Bay in search of a legendary lost pirate treasure, but locals know there’s more than just gold buried in the sand. As the paths of three strangers converge in Maple Bay, the truth is about to be blown wide open. But not before the bodies start to pile up.
Peter Barnett is rapidly approaching 40 with little to show for it when a mysterious letter invites him to Maple Bay and the mansion his estranged family has called home for generations.
Seventeen-year-old Dandy Feltzen is isolated and adrift following the death of her beloved grandfather, until his final request and a tantalizing clue sets her on a mission to solve the mystery he spent his entire life chasing.
Cass Jones has given up on her dream of being a successful author when an unexpected opportunity lands in her a housesitting gig in remote Maple Bay, where she stumbles on the perfect subject matter for her breakout book—and the handsome sailor who might be just the person to help her research it.
Peter, Dandy and Cass have never met, but they’re on a collision course with each other and the mystery that has defined Maple Bay for two centuries, and none of them are prepared for the shocking truths that may or may not still be buried there.

Book Haul
Did I mention that my mother and I shouldn't be left alone in a bookstore? Because really we shouldn't be, and we were. We hit two bookstores, one thrift store, and one Amazon bin store. Books were found in five places. My grandmother was also on the trip and I think she found one book, maybe two.
Ma I think found four, maybe three. I however found a stack and discovered a new part of one of my local bookstores that I'd never noticed before. Which added two new books to my stack.
At least I didn't have to shove my stack into a suitcase. Otherwise, I would have been in trouble. As it is, I need to figure out where exactly on my shelves these new books are gonna go. Because at this moment in time, the shelves are very much overflowing.
I also can't just leave them stacked on the floor. Because my cat will a hundred percent will lick them until the pages are gone. He's a menace. It's a good thing he's cute!

August Silent Book Club
A huge thank you to everyone who stopped by Leftcraft and joined us for the August Silent Book Club! We had an amazing turnout and filled three tables at Leftcraft, and everyone was reading a wide variety of books. It was cool to see some new faces mixed in with returning readers.
This was also a very special Silent Book Club. My Ma and my Mim came for a visit with the sole purpose of joining us for the book club. Which was really cool for me because that's three generations of readers sitting side-by-side! I came by bookworm tendencies honestly.
I'm a reader because of both of the ladies, and I'm a book hoarder because of Ma. Both of us should never be left alone in a bookstore. It was super cool to get show them our book club, and send them home to start one in my hometown!
Our next meet-up will once again be at Leftcraft in Edmonds on September 18th at 7 pm! So if you are in the North Seattle area that day, come and join us. Get some great food and drinks, and settle down to read for an hour!

Currently Reading
I haven't done one of these all month because I haven't been reading. Some of it has been gearing up to have family in town. Some of it has been work being busy. A lot of it has been no drive to read anything, no books or Kindle or audiobook. Anytime I have a second to read, where I should read, I end up either doom scrolling, or zoning out to the TV. My solution was to jump into one of my favorite series, but this time through the full-cast audiobook.
That helped a little, and finally getting my Ma and Mim under my roof also helped.

To celebrate the hotel’s first anniversary, he invites his former best friends from his college Film Club for a reunion. He hasn’t spoken to any of them in sixteen years, not after what happened.
But who better than them to appreciate Alfred’s creation? And to help him finish it.
After all, no Hitchcock set is complete without a body.

Book Haul
Okay, so I went to the store for one thing. To get Insha Fitzpatrick's new book, Sightseeing with Aliens. Because her series is amazing, and everyone should read them. They are silly, fun, and make everything better. I believe no one can be upset when reading her books. And, I ran to go get this book and I don't like aliens. They've creeped me out since childhood.
But, Wednesday was my first day off since the book hit shelves, and I dove into the bookstore for it. I must collect them all.
I went into Third Place Books with the best intentions of only getting just this one book. What happened was drifted over to the graphic novels just to look. Then a book found its way into my bag. Sometimes things happen. I can't just walk away from a noir murder mystery with a supernatural twist. I'm only human.
Then I was waiting for my turn to the shelf where Insha's book was shelved, and wouldn't you know another book found its way into the bag. I don't even feel about it because the house ate Desmond! He was the best character in Holly Horror, I need to know if he's dead.
I think the next time I go to the bookstore I'm going to need an adultier adult. So if you know one, send them my way!

Ripped from the Headlines - Review

Waiting on Wednesday
Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings to spotlight and talk about the books we're excited about that we have yet to read. Generally, they are books that have yet to be released but don't have to be. It is based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous at Breaking the Spine.
Dark and twisting at every turn, fans of Catriona Ward will love this chilling new tale from the deviously inventive horror author that Peter Farris calls the “clear heir to Stephen King.”
Beware the one who got away . . .
Father Silence once terrorized the rural town of Twisted Tree, disguising himself as a priest to prey on the most vulnerable members of society. When the police finally found his “House of Horrors,” they uncovered nineteen bodies and one survivor–a boy now locked away in a hospital for the criminally insane.
Nearly two decades later, Father Silence is finally put to death, but by the next morning, the detective who made the original arrest is found dead. A new serial killer is taking credit for the murder and calling himself the Outcast.
The detective’s daughter, Tess Claibourne, is a detective herself, haunted by childhood trauma and horrified by the death of her father and the resurgence of Father Silence’s legacy.
When Tess’s daughter is kidnapped by the Outcast, Tess is forced to face her worst fears and long-buried memories. With no leads to follow, she travels back to Twisted Tree to visit the boy who survived and see what secrets might be buried in the tangled web of his broken mind.
With captivating prose and an old-school horror flair, Sleep Tight is a must-read, haunting tale from a true master of the genre.
Why I'm Waiting: I'm not, I've already read this, and it traumatized me for nearly a month. Parts of this book still live rent-free in my mind. It was a lot, but so freaking good! You can check out my review here!

Library Haul
What I always need is more books to read, but this month it is a super small haul. One of these books I put on hold the second the library let me because I was so excited about it. The other was a last-minute edition while reading another book because I wanted to read it. I figured the latter would come sooner than the former. But, I should have known better with my luck that both would come in at the same time. Though I'm sure I'll power through both of them because I adore both of these authors.
Cherie Priest, I discovered because of the library nearly a decade ago. Found one of her series, devoured it, and never looked back. So I was excited to see she had another series out, and despite the three other books I'm reading, I know I need to jump into this fast. 39 people are waiting on this book. So there will be no renewing it. So this book first, then back into my NetGalley reads for a bit.
I discovered Harold Schechter back in 2020 while I was out of work because of the COVID shutdowns. Since then I've devoured anything by him. I really like the way he writes about true crime without sugar-coating or throwing light punches. His books always smack me in the feelings and shock me, like a jaw on the floor at moments. I literally I'm nearly finished with one of the books and I've already snagged another. I'm always excited to pick up one of his books.
I'm hoping both of these are August reads! I'd really like to be able to dive into both of them, on top of everything else I have set aside for the month. It's a pretty pile which is a little bold considering how busy I am this weekend and then with some special guests to arrive toward the end of the month. So we shall see.
