Cover Runway Sunday

They say you shouldn't judge a book by its cover, but we all know we do it. Sometimes, the cover initially catches our eye, drawing us to give a book a closer look. It's the first thing we see, our first impression. Every Sunday, I'll post some of my favorite book covers. Coming soon!

Alex Easton does not want to visit America.

Waiting on Wednesday

Can't-Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings to spotlight and discuss the books we're excited about that we haven't yet read. Generally, they are books that have yet to be released, but don't have to be. It is based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous folks at Breaking the Spine.

Imagine if the Sackler family had a demon at their beck and call.

The Berisha family runs one of the largest import-export companies in the world, and they’ve always been lucky. Their rivals suffer strokes. Inconvenient buildings catch on fire. Earthquakes swallow up manufacturing plants, destroying harmful evidence. Things always seem to work out for the Berishas. They’re blessed.

At least that is what Zef, the patriarch, has always told his three children. And each of them knows their place in the family—Dardan, as the only male heir, must prepare to take over as keeper of the Berisha secrets, Maris’s most powerful contribution, much to her dismay, will be to marry strategically, and Nora’s job, as the youngest, is to just stay out of the way. But when things stop going as planned, and the family blessing starts looking more like a curse, the Berishas begin to splinter, each hatching their own secret scheme. They didn’t get to be one of the richest families in the world without spilling a little blood, but this time, it might be their own.

Why I'm Waiting: One, because who doesn't want a demon at their beck and call. Two, I love Alma Katsu's books. I've read three so far, and they did not disappoint.

The Fervor - Review

Author: Alma Katsu
Genre: Historical Fiction / Horror
Format: Paperback
Pages: 309

Ever finish a book and know you should write a review for it, but for some reason, the words won't come? I'm currently there with my review for The Fervor by Alam Katsu. It may be because my review will not do this book justice, and a little bit of being so busy, my brain might be a liquid. All my words have been used at my big kid job, and I'm having a hard time using them here.

So here's what's going to happen. I'm going to do my best to give this book the review it deserves. Because I did really enjoy this book, which isn't all that surprising since I always enjoy Alma Katsu's books. They are always a beautiful mix of historical fiction and horror, a little gross and a little educational. I always ended up Googling things with Katsu's books, and I don't mind that at all.

One of the many things I like about Kastu's books is that they definitely belong in horror; they're almost a bit like cozy horror. Where sometimes there's a bit of ick, maybe a job scare here, and every so often you're reading page after page because you've gotten caught up in the suspense of it all. And, while all that was here with this book. That didn't change. The horror part of this book almost feels like a footnote.

While it's there and serves a purpose, and never feels out of place at any time. Never feeling forced. It's not why I kept coming back. Actually, it would have been a reason for me not to come back. I hate spiders; they creep me right out. It's the multiple eyes, the fact that they learn your routine, some of them kind of kill you, some are as big as my cat, and now some drive you insane. So, at any point, would the horror part of this book have been enough for me to go. Nope, not for me, thanks.

But I did, I kept coming back. Multiple days of falling asleep with this book in my hand. My copy is beat to all sorts of crap because I took it everywhere with me. I shoved in my concert bag to go see a K-pop band. Had several people stop me to ask me about the book. It was awesome, but I digress.

What kept me coming back to The Fervor was the story itself and the characters. Even the characters I found I didn't really like, I wanted to see how their story was going to unfold. A few we didn't get to see their fates, but you probably imagine what happened to them. It doesn't feel happy or shiny.

The reason it's different because this book meant something different to Alam Katsu herself. It's a book about her family's past and her heritage. So maybe that changed the way she wrote this book, which made it feel different. Because the story itself didn't just come from her, but from everyone who helped her write. Whatever it was, it was amazing and I so enjoyed it.

It was so uncomfortable at times, but that was the point. It was written to make me feel better about this being in our past. Because it was, but it wasn't. The amount of highlighting I did in this book about parallels of what was happening then, to what's happening it. I'm kind of surprised the book is filled with highlighter marks. Yes, this is a book of fiction. Because I so hope there are tiny, clear spiders with madness in them doing the bidding of a Japanese demon. So much, no thank you.

For all the fiction that filled the book. For all the creepy Asain Folklore in this book. It wasn't the scariest part of this book. It was watching history repeating itself, knowing people were denying it, rationalizing it, and letting it happen. Which makes this book so very important, spiders and all. Which makes this book a thing people should read, even if you don't like spooky things. Because the base of this story, the point of the story, is something we need to read. This is history is something we need to not forget.

So, for that, a huge thank you to Alma Katsu for taking that on. And this review will not do this book justice for everything it was. But it is so good, and it's not staying on my shelves. Highlight markers and all, I'm putting this into a free little library in town in hopes someone else picks up and reads it, and passes it on.

Mini Reviews

To this day, I have never finished Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell, but it's a little intimidating. So when I saw Susanna Clark had a novella out, I jumped at the chance to read it. This was oddly cute and sad, and really good! Definitely more winter vibes and spooky, and the illustrations complemented the story as well. I need to find more by Clarke; I really like her writing style.

What in the many levels of hell was this? Did I know this was a serial killer, body horror type of story? Yes, I got the gist of what I was about to dive into. The cover made that very clear. However. HOWEVER! What in the actual, listen? I have no idea what is happening. To the point, I've already put the second volume on hold. Because I need more information, because I thought I knew what was happening, but now I don't. Listen, what the hell?!

Edmonds Silent Book Club

A massive thank you to everyone who was able to come read with us last night! We had such an amazing turnout once again! I'm always a little nervous now that the next meet-up won't be as big as the last, but every month we grow a little bigger. While it's always great to see familiar faces every month, we had so many new ones last night. So many were at their first Silent Book Club meet-up ever, which is always an honor because there are so many chapters to choose from out here.

I didn't get a massive group photo of all of us reading because I'd just started a new book, and I'd gotten pulled into the weirdness of the story. Which means I forgot I needed to get content on top of reading my book. But, as you can see, I did get a photo of nearly everyone's book! We did have a few people there listening to audiobooks; their books are not in the photo.

There were a few announcements last night of bookish things happening in the areaish, Puyllap isn't exactly in the neighborhood, but a book fair is a book fair. In order: Sept 11th at Barnard Griffen in Woodinville is doing a Sip and Silent Read, and Sept 14th, Lost the Plot is hosting a book swap and sip at Stoup Brewing in Ballard. Both of those are free events, and you can RSVP at Eventbrite, as well as find out more information on both! Lastly, Bundok Books in Puyallup is hosting a Book Fair at the FCC Puyallup. If you head over to Instagram, you can find more information on the Book Fair at @bundokbooks!

Michelle and I will definitely beat  Stoup Brewing for the book swap! So if you see us, come say hi! We'd love to see what you're reading and if you find any bookish goodies!

If you couldn't make it to our meet-up yesterday, never fear, Edmonds Book Club will be back at Leftcraft on September 17th! We'll kick off reading at 7:30, but you are welcome to come early to mingle and eat!

From true crime master Harold Schechter, author of Murderabilia, comes 50 States of Murder, a geographic telling of some of the most notorious but lesser-known murders for each US State.

Filled with hundreds of entries organized by location, 50 States of Murder is both a lively and chilling work of storytelling and an authoritative survey of the homicidal history of the United States—perfect for any true-crime obsessive. Certain crimes are impossible to imagine happening anywhere but where they Could the Manson murders have gone down somewhere besides the 1960s sex-and-drug-fueled, occult-dabbling culture of Southern California? Would Truman Capote’s In Cold Blood been as powerful if the Clutter family massacre happened anywhere besides the tightly knit world of Holcomb, Kansas? Or would the “Unabomber” Ted Kaczynski have been able to hole up in the woods evading notice for decades anywhere but in Montana? Discover each state’s most memorable and notorious crimes through expert authorship and stunning visuals and interactive design.

Why I'm Waiting: I know it's weird to say because of the type of books that Schechter writes; however, I really like the way he writes True Crime. I always learn something and enjoy what I read.

Dear Detective,

Surely you have seen the papers and read about the murder of the American novelist Roy Peterson—stabbed while in a room with six other people, and yet no one went near him or saw the murder occur. The crime is so devious, so logistically impossible, that it seems to have been committed not by a person but by a disembodied hand.

I must confess that we are at a loss. Who wrote the poison pen letters that lured these seven people to this deadly gathering? What do a poet, an Earl, an actress, a cook, a telephone operator, and a lothario have in common? And how can a man be stabbed in a room full of suspects when none of them could have done it?

We have had our best people on the case, Detective, and we still can’t make heads or tails of it. We are giving this case file to you. Can you decipher the clues, decode the witness statements, and identify the murderer? You are our last hope. Can you help us crack the Case of the Creeping Hand?

Yours truly,

Detective Chief Inspector of the Metropolitan Police

Why I'm Waiting: I adored Your Guide to Not Getting Murdered in a Quaint English Village (if you haven't checked that out, I highly recommend it, especially if you need a good giggle.) Which means I have high hopes for how much this is going to be!

Mini Reviews

This was really good. I wasn't really sure what to expect when I picked this up because, honestly, I snagged it because of the cover. The story itself surprised me with how quickly it pulled me in. I like how I didn't see all of Laila's deaths, just the ones that really matter the most. But it was interesting to move the plot along a timeline by dragging the story on for ages. The artwork was beautiful and the story compelling. I'm really glad I stumbled across this at the library. It was an ace find!

Ugh, I wanted to like this so much more than I did. I've been on such a Western Horror kick for the last few months. So between the cover and the synopsis, this would be a win, and it starts off with a bang and pulls me right now. But somewhere in the middle, I kind of stopped caring, and the only reason I kept reading was to figure out how it all connected. But I knew who the villain was what his angel was. I also wasn't super surprised by the twist about the main gal's (I already forgot her name) son. It was really good in theory, and so much potential. But it just didn't do it for me from start to finish. Even the ending felt a bit rushed in a way, instead of being as epic as they were aiming for.

When she arrives, Mila comes face to face with the town reverend, who informs her that Agatha is now also missing. Night Worms Unboxing

August Theme: Feral & Hysterical

I have been so excited for this package because Feral & Hystrical was set to be inside! Thanks to Night Worms, I do read a lot of women in horror than I have in the past because they do an amazing job of bringing so many of their works into my home. However, for every one I get from Night Worms or stumble on my own, I'm sure so many more never make my dash. Or I see a book in passing and think, that sounds good, and then I forget. Because for me, once things are out of sight out of mind. So I'm very excited to sticky note the crap out of this book.

Honestly, I need to figure out what to do with all of the stickers. I know I say this every month, but the drawer I've been keeping them in is now officially full. My water bottle, full. My to-go coffee cup, full. My computer, full. See the pattern that is forming. Now I have two more that are awesome, and I'm not sure where to put them all. Though that tea came at a great time because, since the weather cannot decide if it's Fall or Summer, my sinuses are so confused and upset.

Huge thanks to the ladies and all their helpers for another amazing month of Night Worms!!

Book Haul

I was helping out a friend of mine who was out of town by running an errand for them, and wouldn't you know it, there was a Barnes & Noble on my way home. Sort of. If I avoided the highway, which would probably have been a faster way home, I had a gift card. So I mean basically all of these three of them were free because one of them was half off, and I still have money on my gift card. Oh, and now I also have a coupon. Return trip!!

Honestly, I think the fact that I only came with three books, one of which I meant to come with, is most surprising about this trip. Because the last time I went to Barnes and Noble with a gift card, I went crazy. While I could have done that again, I knew two facts that stopped me: one, Night Worms was on the way with two more books, and two, I'm running out of space for books. Again.

But! I've been really excited for the How to Survive Camping, and I've heard a lot of good things about The Farm House. The latter will definitely be a spooky season book, I think. And despite the stack of books I wanted to read this summer (watches as summer is quickly coming close). I'm probably picking up How to Survive Camping next. My Summer TBR will become my Fall TBR because it'll be every season is cozy murder season.

And, after so much going on this summer, I'm looking forward to being housebound wants the weather goes absolutely vile, cold and wet. But, only after going more this Fall. I was promised a haunted castle. But, I think this winter will be the perfect time to freak myself out with Japanese Folk Tales!

Ellie Isles first became obsessed with the I-64 murders when she saw her own face on one of the victims. Identical to every detail, the woman wasn’t her, but she could have been. Compelled to discover the story of her dopplegänger’s death, Ellie wrote a bestselling true crime book about the serial killer, dubbed “the Spider.”

Four years later, the Spider still hasn't been caught, and his victim count is climbing. Many of the bodies remain unidentified, but with Ellie’s online network of true crime followers, that’s slowly changing. Together they’ve pooled information to create a massive database that tracks people at risk of becoming Jane and John Does–the homeless, the drug addicted, and the downtrodden–with the hopes that if they become victims, they might at least be identified.

Now that Ellie has successfully identified multiple victims, the law enforcement task force tracking down the Spider pulls her in to help–and after Ellie’s therapist is arrested for the murders, she is more determined than ever to help catch the Spider.

With striking prose and a horror flair, Spider to the Fly is an engrossing serial killer thriller, perfect for fans of The Whisper Man.

Why I'm Waiting: Because I really like the twisty way J.H. Markert writes, and the way that his stories always linger with me.
