Can't Wait Wednesday

Can't Wait Wednesday is a weekly meme hosted by Wishful Endings to spotlight and talk about the books we're excited about what we have yet to read. Generally they are books that have yet to be released, but don't have to be. It is based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous at Breaking the Spine.

Release Date: July 31st, 2018
Author: Edgar Cantero
Genre: Noir
Pages: 256

In a dingy office in Fisherman's Wharf, the glass panel in the door bears the names of A. Kimrean and Z. Kimrean. Private Eyes. Behind the door there is only one desk, one chair, one scrawny androgynous P.I. in a tank top and skimpy waistcoat. A.Z., as they are collectively known, are twin brother and sister. He's pure misanthropic logic, she's wild hedonistic creativity. The Kimreans have been locked in mortal battle since they were in utero...which is tricky because they, very literally, share one single body. That's right. One body, two pilots. The mystery and absurdity of how Kimrean functions, and how they subvert every plotline, twist, explosion, and gunshot--and confuse every cop, neckless thug, cartel boss, ninja, and femme fatale--in the book is pure Cantero magic.

Why I'm Waiting: Because Edgar Cantero wrote a Noir novel. It's my two favorite things shoved together in one book! Plus do you see that cover, and there's ninjas. Just yes, all the way around please.

New Release Tuesday

Author: Jay Kristoff
Pages: 416

On a floating junkyard beneath a radiation sky, a deadly secret lies buried in the scrap.

Eve isn’t looking for secrets—she’s too busy looking over her shoulder. The robot gladiator she’s just spent six months building has been reduced to a smoking wreck, and the only thing keeping her Grandpa from the grave was the fistful of credits she just lost to the bookies. To top it off, she’s discovered she can destroy electronics with the power of her mind, and the puritanical Brotherhood are building a coffin her size. If she’s ever had a worse day, Eve can’t remember it.

But when Eve discovers the ruins of an android boy named Ezekiel in the scrap pile she calls home, her entire world comes crashing down. With her best friend Lemon Fresh and her robotic conscience, Cricket, in tow, she and Ezekiel will trek across deserts of irradiated glass, infiltrate towering megacities and scour the graveyard of humanity’s greatest folly to save the ones Eve loves, and learn the dark secrets of her past.

He had me at Lemon Fresh, and then kept me with how epic this book sounds. After hearing Jay Kristoff talk about it at the Illuminae Book Event, I've been impatiently waiting for this one. Finally the day has come!

Cover Runway Sunday

They say don't judge a book by it's cover, but we all know we do it. Sometimes it's the cover that originally catches our eye, drawing us to give a book a closer look. It's the first thing we see, our first impression. Every Sunday I'm going to post some of my favorite covers of books coming soon! Some are by authors I already enjoy, some are the reason I gave the book a longer look. Either way they're all going to find their way here!

Release Date: July 10th, 2018
Pages: 304
Genre: Noir / Humor

Vice President Joe Biden is fresh out of the Obama White House and feeling adrift when his favorite railroad conductor dies in a suspicious accident, leaving behind an ailing wife and a trail of clues. To unravel the mystery, “Amtrak Joe” re-teams with the only man he’s ever fully trusted—the 44th president of the United States. Together they’ll plumb the darkest corners of Delaware, traveling from cheap motels to biker bars and beyond, as they uncover the sinister forces advancing America’s opioid epidemic.

This sounds like so much fun, and I hope so much that it becomes a series! I already have my book pre-ordered. Now all I have to do is wait for it to be released and arrive.

New Release Tuesday

Author: Stephen King
Pages: 576

An unspeakable crime. A confounding investigation. At a time when the King brand has never been stronger, he has delivered one of his most unsettling and compulsively readable stories.

An eleven-year-old boy’s violated corpse is found in a town park. Eyewitnesses and fingerprints point unmistakably to one of Flint City’s most popular citizens. He is Terry Maitland, Little League coach, English teacher, husband, and father of two girls. Detective Ralph Anderson, whose son Maitland once coached, orders a quick and very public arrest. Maitland has an alibi, but Anderson and the district attorney soon add DNA evidence to go with the fingerprints and witnesses. Their case seems ironclad.

As the investigation expands and horrifying answers begin to emerge, King’s propulsive story kicks into high gear, generating strong tension and almost unbearable suspense. Terry Maitland seems like a nice guy, but is he wearing another face?

I'm seriously behind on my Stephen King books! However, The Outsider will be the one to pull me back into his world of Horror. Even if I know I'm not emotional ready for whatever is about to happen in this book.

Bout of Books 22 Wrap Up

The start of the week was definitely better than the end. Got a little distracted gearing up for my vacation. One book is off my TBR pile and another one is right behind it. The later I'm sure I'll finish before I leave, and I'll pick up hardback up again during my flight. All-in-all a good week in reading!

Bout of Books come back 8/20/2018 -- 8/26/2018 for #23! How did everyone else do this week? Read anything amazing? Anything not so amazing??

Genre: Fantasy

Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, a hero, the Chosen One, was born . . . and so begins every fairy tale ever told.

This is not that fairy tale.

There is a Chosen One, but he is unlike any One who has ever been Chosened.

And there is a faraway kingdom, but you have never been to a magical world quite like the land of Pell.

There, a plucky farm boy will find more than he's bargained for on his quest to awaken the sleeping princess in her cursed tower. First there's the Dark Lord who wishes for the boy's untimely death . . . and also very fine cheese. Then there's a bard without a song in her heart but with a very adorable and fuzzy tail, an assassin who fears not the night but is terrified of chickens, and a mighty fighter more frightened of her sword than of her chain-mail bikini. This journey will lead to sinister umlauts, a trash-talking goat, the Dread Necromancer Steve, and a strange and wondrous journey to the most peculiar "happily ever after" that ever once-upon-a-timed.

This sounds like so much fun! Can you really hate a Dark Lord who likes really fine cheeses? But, also I was sold with the words "trash-talking goat". This will be my first book by both authors.

William Shakespeare's: The Phantom Menace - Review

Author: Ian Doescher
Genre: Sci-Fi / Re-telling
Format: Ebook
Pages: 176

Join us, good gentles, for a merry reimagining of Star Wars: Episode I as only Shakespeare could have written it. The entire saga starts here, with a thrilling tale featuring a disguised queen, a young hero, and two fearless knights facing a hidden, vengeful enemy.

'Tis a true Shakespearean drama, filled with sword fights, soliloquies, and doomed romance... all in glorious iambic pentameter and coupled with twenty gorgeous Elizabethan illustrations. Hold onto your mini-chlorians: The play's the thing, wherein you'll catch the rise of Anakin!

I forgot how much I love this series! In fact I don't even have a good reason as to why it took me this long to finally pick it back up. Even though I dislike these movies, Ian Doescher worked his magic and made me find a reason to love them. He might have even given me a few reason to enjoy JarJar, just a few. Though, I still find C3PO annoying not matter in what form he's written.

Hats off to Ian Doescher as well. Not only for how many times he had to watch this movie, but for how amazing this book flowed. Writing in iambic pentameter is hard enough, but having to do while describing a podrace and droid battle to the point the have to make sense. Amazing!

Personally I felt the book flowed well and had great pacing. While this was suppose to be a bus book, it quickly become a while I was cooking, not into this show, and right before bed book. Devoured faster than I do most books, and I've already downloaded the next book in this series. Not because I enjoy the prequels, but because I can't wait to see how Ian Doescher writes angsty Skywalker.

A lot of work went into this book and it shows. Never once did the theme of the book drop. The characters were as true to themselves as I remember them being. Though I have to admit it's been so long since I've seen this movie I had to go back and check to see if things really happened. I forgot Padme had a body double. I forgot about how the movie even opened up, and I also forgot that Skywalker has always crush on Padme.

Also, I loved famous moments of Shakespeare's work appeared throughout the story. Which as a lover of most of Shakespeare's work, I enjoyed. And, got a few weird looks on the bus when I laughed. Which is fine, this book is totally work the odd looks. It might have even convinced to re-watch the movies. Maybe.

But, I'm definilty picking this series back up and getting caught up in time to catch the next book in the series, Jedi the Last.

Buy, Borrow, or Skip: Personally I borrowed this one from local library, but anything that gets you to pick up this series is a plus. It's hilarious and so well put together.

Generally they are books that have yet to be released, but don't have to be. It is based on Waiting on Wednesday, hosted by the fabulous at Breaking the Spine.

Author: Margalit Fox
Genre: Non-Fiction
Pages: 352

In 1908, a wealthy woman was brutally murdered in her Glasgow home. The police found a convenient suspect in Oscar Slater--an immigrant Jewish cardsharp--who, despite his obvious innocence, was tried, convicted, and consigned to life at hard labor in a brutal Scottish prison. Conan Doyle, already world famous as the creator of Sherlock Holmes, was outraged by this injustice and became obsessed with the case. Using the methods of his most famous character, he scoured trial transcripts, newspaper accounts, and eyewitness statements, meticulously noting myriad holes, inconsistencies, and outright fabrications by police and prosecutors. Finally, in 1927, his work won Slater's freedom.

Why I'm Waiting: I am a huge Sherlock Holmes fan, and Arthur Conan Doyle was such a strange man. He really had a strange and interesting life. So I'm excited to get my hands on this book!

New Release Tuesday

Warlock Holmes and Dr John Watson find themselves inconvenienced by a variety of eldritch beings, and the fact that one of them has goat legs. Christmas brings a goose that doesn't let being cooked slow him down, then they meet an electricity demon, discover why being a redhead is even trickier than one might imagine, and Holmes attempts an Irish accent. And naturally Moriarty is hanging around in some form or other.

Best library find, ever! I loved this series so very much! Just waiting to go pick up my copy at the local bookstore! My plan is to be able to hold off to read this on vacation. We'll see how well I manage that..

Bout of Books 22

Bout of Books

The day has finally arrived! Bout of Books 22 is finally here. The week where I force myself to keep the TV off and catch up on that ever growing TBR pile. I swear one day the books will over take my room. Hopefully this week I can put a little bit of a dent on at least one of the piles, of which there are many! Because what are bookshelves?

First a little about Bout of Books. It's super low stress and it's all about reading. You set your own pace and your way to participate. You don't need a blog to join in on all the fun, just some form of social media. But, really that isn't necessary either. My flatmate always joins in unofficially and takes more time to read during this week as well. However, you can find all the information at their blog, Bout of Books. I think there is one day left for sign-ups.

As for me, this will be the first year of doing Bout of Books with Book Club. So that's going to be new. I'm hoping to finish the two books I'm currently reading and a bust out a couple of Graphic Novels that have been sitting on my shelf for about a month. You can see my progress throughout the week here!

Good luck to everyone this week! Can't wait to see whatever is reading and loving. Maybe even what you didn't love. One person's DNF is another person's book of the year.

Someone is murdering the sons of the ruthless drug cartel boss known as the Lyon in the biggest baddest town in California--San Carnal. The notorious A.Z. Kimrean must go to the sin-soaked, palm-tree-lined streets of San Carnal, infiltrate the Lyon's inner circle, and find out who is targeting his heirs, and while they are at it, rescue an undercover cop in too deep, deal with a plucky young stowaway, and stop a major gang war from engulfing California. They'll face every plot device and break every rule Elmore Leonard wrote before they can crack the case, if they don't kill each other (themselves) first.

I love Edgar Cantero's writing style! Supernatural Enhancements was an amazing read and best read at night, and I'm just now picking Meddling Kids. I'm freaking excited his next book is a Noir. Definitely adding this to my shelves this summer.

Mini Reviews

Oh my gosh, this was the cutest thing I've read so far this year. I absouletely loved it, and I'm so glad I picked it up at ECCC. The tag line was what drew me to it. Who doesn't love a derpy vampire, and Patrik is such a sweet little vampire. I love Cyril to pieces! It's hard not to fall in love with Patrik and his cookie baking ways. Finger crossed we get a Book Two!

I'm in love with series. Em has quickly become my favorite character, and every time I think I have it figure out another shoe drops. Mostly because I get pulled into one mystery, I let the other fall to the side. Ugh, it makes it so hard to wait for each new volume to arrive from the library. Because I gotta know!

Author: K.R. Richardson
Pages: 496

Eric Matheson, an idealistic rookie cop trying to break from his powerful family, is plunged into the investigation of a brutal crime in his first weeks on the job in Angra Dastrelas, the corrupt capital city of the corporate-owned planet Gattis. Dillal, the planet's first cybernetically enhanced investigator. Coming from a despised ethnic underclass, the brilliant and secretive Dillal seems determined to unravel the crime regardless of the consequences. April Wrap Up

Lots going on this month, but I honestly should have read a lot more than I did. Even with me picking up more shifts to make up for the time off I'm about to take. Been out trying to enjoy the nice weather that popped up finally. For a minute there I didn't think Spring was ever going to come out here. Honestly though besides work I haven't been up to much, besides not reading. It's mostly been hanging out with my flatmate since she's about to be gone for the summer.

Books Read: 4
Pages Reads: 918
BINGO Books: 1 (Non-Human Character)
Currently Reading: Yiddish for Pirates by Gary Barwin

Sadly I missed out on one of the events I wanted to go to because I wasn't feeling a hundred percent, and I didn't want to get anyone else gunky. However, my flatmate went to so I got to hear all about it. Which means it wasn't a total loss. Because it was one of her favorite authors and I'm glad she finally got hear Christopher Moore talk about his work and meet him.

I did get to finally participate in SEABookstore Day with a friend of mine. It was super fun and I can't wait go again next year. I picked up a horde of really good books and I've already busted into the new pile. Yes, despite the other piles calling my name. More on that day can be found here!

There are a couple of book events coming up this month: Bout of Books 22 and Fierce Reads Tour.  I might be able to squeeze in one more, but I'm not a sure yet. Either way it's gonna be a good month!
