Every month I chose a book, or two, to feature on my sidebar for the entire month. These can range from the one book I really wanted to read this month, or in the rarer cases, a book I managed to snag a little early and fell in love with. This month just happens to fall into the latter category! In fact, Hench by Natalie Zina Walschots, is one of my favorite reads of 2020. It absolutely blew me away and I devoured the book in basically a day. I've already passed my copy on to my roommate, and I've been raving about to my friends who read for the last few weeks! It's beautifully written and the story is as heartbreaking as it is powerful. You don't even have to like superhero movies and comics to enjoy Hench because it is so much more! So seriously, pre-ordered if you can and snag it from your library if you can't!
So, of course, then she gets laid off.
With no money and no mobility, with only her anger and internet research acumen, she discovers her suffering at the hands of a hero is far from unique. When people start listening to the story that her data tells, she realizes she might not be as powerless as she thinks.
Because the key to everything is data: knowing how to collate it, how to manipulate it, and how to weaponize it. By tallying up the human cost these caped forces of nature wreak upon the world, she discovers that the line between good and evil is mostly marketing. And with social media and viral videos, she can control that appearance.
It’s not too long before she’s employed once more, this time by one of the worst villains on earth. As she becomes an increasingly valuable lieutenant, she might just save the world.
